One Nation Under God (November 24, 2001, Joseph Ministries)
With the recent attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, we have seen more unity in the United States than for many years past and everywhere we go we see the message “God Bless America”. Yet, this nation remains far from God. Though there has been an increased interest in the things of God, there continues to be a serious attack on the principles that this nation has been founded on. The term “separation of church and state” has become a common phrase used in reference to the laws of the land to attack the foundations, yet this phrase does not even appear in our Constitution. To all but the most liberal, this statement is far from the intent of the founding fathers. Most don’t even know what the Constitution actually says. Freedom of religion (not “from religion”) is guaranteed by Amendment I to the Constitution and it states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for redress or grievances.”
So, we want God to “bless America”, yet one school board went so far as to attempt to take the words “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance. Many have asked “Where was God?” during these attacks. Why would God show up where He is not welcome? Well, fortunately, there are still a significant number of people in America that want the one true God to manifest and change this nation. 2 Chronicles 7:14 states “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” So, God has given us His formula for healing our land. It is our responsibility to follow His formula. Note that this does not require the lost to pray and seek His face and turn from their wicked ways, but rather His people – the church.
Thus, we hold the solution to the problems that America is facing. It is not the government (though we should pray for them) or the business leaders, or the military, or law enforcement agencies that will heal America. The success or failure of this nation has never rested on the shoulders of man, but rather on the hand of God. The church is responsible for this nation. So, what are we waiting for? God is well able to turn this completely around and truly heal our land. Let’s pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways. When we do this, we will truly see “God Bless America” and we will once again truly be “One Nation, Under God.”
